Character:
Character's Name: "Todd" (Guide)*
*The name Guide comes from a series of books written to follow up season five of Atlantis. In the TV series, Wraith do not reveal their own names, and are occasionally given harmless-sounding human names. So while other characters might think of him as 'Todd', he thinks of himself as 'Guide'.
Character's Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Character's Home Universe: Welcome to Pegasus. It's closely related to the main Stargate universe, but the two only cross over occasionally.
Canon Point you're taking him from: After Infection (SGA Season 5), but before Enemy At The Gate.
Method of Arrival on Station: After losing one of his hives to disease, Todd elected to lead a mission to restore a bit of his followers' faith in him. It was a simple one: to chase off a cruiser that a rival hive had sent to one of his feeding grounds. Todd took two of his own cruisers, to be safe. Both his cruisers made the jump to hyperspace, but only one arrived at its proper destination.
The cruiser Todd piloted had passed through a Gate, and dropped out of hyperspace near a white dwarf star's system.
With the cruiser's navigation system apparently broken, Todd established an orbit around a planetoid so that his technicians could make repairs. While in orbit, the cruiser's sensors picked up on two unusual energy readings: a structure on the planet's surface, and an inbound ship of some sort. Rather than risk detection, Todd landed his cruiser on the planetoid's surface. He ordered most of his crew to go into hibernation, and kept all but the ship's most essential systems online. By landing near the curious structure, he was able to mask his ship's energy readings with that of the dome's.
He did not anticipate that the dome would draw energy from his ship. By the time that explorers from Senburu-Trati'salan came to investigate the planet's surface, the dome had already sapped enough energy from the cruiser to keep it grounded.
Physical Appearance: A slide show, courtesy of MGM.
Aside from having all the standard Wraith characteristics (pale, vein-y skin; white hair; catlike pupils, etc.), Todd seems to be have a permanent case of bed-head. Whether it's a stylistic choice by the show creators to highlight his eccentric behavior or simple unwillingness to find a hairbrush, it makes him (an otherwise sharply-dressed individual) stand out among the neatly combed-and-trimmed members of his caste.
It's difficult to tell exactly how tall he is, except that he's at least as tall as Ronon, if not taller.
Personality: Todd is by design one of the top predators of the Pegasus Galaxy - which is no mean feat, as humans are especially tricky prey. Although, while all Wraith are supposedly highly intelligent, crafty people, Todd is only one of two Wraith (the other being Michael) to actively exhibit this. He often drags members of the Atlantis expedition into his own schemes without telling them the more objectionable details of his plans, thereby furthering his own ends without having to convince Atlantis-1 to go entirely against their morals. When possible, he also favors stealth over strength when it comes to dealing with enemies, as opposed to the tried-and-true Wraith method of blasting a hated enemy into a fine dust.
Even for a Wraith, though, Todd is an odd one. He has very little trouble working with the humans of the Atlantis expedition, even though he would feed on any one of them under normal circumstances. Where most Wraith are far too proud to ally with humans, Todd doesn't mind asking for a bit of help when he needs it. As early as his first appearance, he worked out a deal with Col. Sheppard - they would escape from a Genii prison together, then split up once they reached the planet's stargate. Since that escape, Todd has worked with Atlantis to take down mutual enemies and solve problems related to Wraith overfeeding. To ease the tensions during Atlantis-Hive negotiations, Todd is extraordinarily civil and courteous, even going so far as to observe some human customs. (Of course, wishing that the fruit you've provided is 'as delicious as the farmers who grew them' is a bit off-putting.)
He is also noble, for a member of a species that sees murder as an acceptable means to earn a promotion. If and when he gives his word, he will uphold it. In return, he expects others to keep their word as well. When he feels that his sense of honor is being exploited, he becomes visibly hurt and upset - even violent. As such, he only gives his word sparingly, and only to those that he explicitly trusts.
Todd does have a sense of humor, albeit a dry and dark one. He has a special talent for finding humor in otherwise serious things, such as when Dr. Keller apologizes to him for inadvertently giving him a cancer-like disease. He finds it more amusing that she would even want to apologize to a Wraith, sick or otherwise. He has a sharp wit as well, so he's just as likely to make a joke as he is to laugh at one.
Do not mistake his civil - even pleasant - exterior for anything more. Todd is in no way, shape, or form anyone's friend. He may appear friendly and likeable, but he ultimately serves himself and his hive. One should be extremely cautious around him, even if he has been an ally in the past. He will steal from a 'friend' if he thinks that it will benefit him in the long run, and he will kill as he sees is appropriate.
Abilities and Skills: A more detailed description of Todd's abilities can be found here, and a summary of Wraith physiology here. But here's the quick and dirty version:
Todd cannot die of natural aging, but he may still be killed by other factors such as malnourishment or physical trauma. His exact age goes unstated, but he's at least 10,000 years old.
He has a very strong immune system and the ability to heal rapidly. The more recently he has fed, the faster he can recover from injuries and illness. If he has not fed in a while, he may not be able to fully recover from a deep wound.
He is physically strong enough to bodily fling men his size. Like healing, this is linked to how recently he has fed. If he hasn't fed in a while, he becomes listless and prone to fainting.
Todd has telepathic abilities that allow him to communicate with other Wraith over a distance. He can also get into the heads of humans, allowing him to read feelings like fear, hunger, or defiance. He can project ghostlike images into others' heads, called 'shadows'.
He can feed on human life force through an organ in his right palm. Wraith are capable of eating solid food, but they subsist on life force. The feeding process also works in reverse, allowing a Wraith to heal or restore other human-like beings.
Sample: "Would anyone care to tell me why we have not arrived at our proper destination?"
There was an uncomfortable silence on the cruiser's bridge. Guide could very nearly feel the uncertainty of his crew as they searched for an answer. Their eyes darted back and forth between him and the ship's computers' screens. By all rights, they should be nervous, he thought. His mission depended upon their swift arrival at the Alliance's feeding ground. Delays like this were inexcusable.
"Well?"
After another tense pause, the ship's navigator spoke. "This ship lost the coordinates of our destination shortly before we dropped from hyperspace. I do not know why. I have tried to reestablish our course, but the computer does not recognize our current location."
Guide's face remained blank in spite of this setback. "And our other ship?"
"Nowhere to be found. We can only assume that it continued without trouble."
He let out a low growl. Of all the times to be lost! Or worse, sabotaged by a disgruntled underling. "Establish an orbit around the planet our sensors picked up until the navigation system is repaired. I want this ship back on course as soon as possible." As his crew moved to fulfill his order, Guide added, "run a diagnosis on the hyperdrive and inform me of any further errors."
By the stars, he hoped that it had not come to sabotage. This mission was far too important to the Alliance for some upstart to ruin. And if it had come to sabotage, he would personally put his would-be usurper in his place.
Permanently.
